How to Request San Diego Traffic School Through the Court

Before you can take our San Diego traffic school course, you must pay your bail (fine) plus the court’s traffic school administrative fee directly to the San Diego County Superior Court. The administrative fee is currently $52. The total amount (bail + $52) will be listed on your courtesy notice under “Traffic School.” Once the court approves you for traffic school, you will have 90 days to complete the course.

You can pay your fine and request traffic school through any of the following methods:

📞 By Phone

Call the court location listed on your ticket or courtesy notice Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Pay by credit or debit card over the phone and request traffic school during the same call.

✉ By Mail

🏢 In Person or Express Drop Box

Visit any San Diego traffic court location during business hours (Mon–Fri, 8:30 AM–4:00 PM) and request traffic school at the clerk’s window. Express drop boxes are available at some courthouses for after-hours document submission. All courtroom appearances are by appointment only.

Payment plans are available. If you cannot pay the full amount at once, you can set up an installment plan online or in person. San Diego County also offers financial hardship options, including reduced payment amounts for payments under $35/month and community service or volunteer work in lieu of fines. What San Diego County Drivers Need to Know About Traffic School

San Diego County has several unique procedures that differ from other California counties. Understanding these details before you start will help you avoid delays and ensure your ticket is handled properly.

90-day completion deadline. Once San Diego County Superior Court approves you for traffic school and you pay your fine and fees, you have 90 days to complete the course. This is more generous than many California counties that offer only 60 days. However, San Diego does not offer a standard extension — if you need more time, you must contact the court directly to request one, and approval is not guaranteed.

Courtesy notice arrives by mail. Approximately two weeks before your “appear by” date, the San Diego County Superior Court will mail you a courtesy notice. This notice tells you whether you are eligible for traffic school, your total bail amount, and the $52 administrative fee. If you do not receive a courtesy notice, do not wait — contact the court directly or check your citation status on the court’s traffic portal.

The “appear by” date is a deadline, not a hearing date. San Diego County requires appointments for all courtroom appearances. The date on your ticket is the deadline by which you must take action — pay your fine, request traffic school, or request an extension. You can schedule an appointment online or by phone if you need to appear in person.

Scam warning. The San Diego Superior Court has issued warnings about text message scams claiming court fees are overdue. The court does not conduct business via text messages. All official correspondence comes through U.S. mail. Check your citation status through the official court portal if you are unsure.

Commercial driver license holders: If you hold a CDL and received a ticket while driving a non-commercial vehicle, you may still attend traffic school. However, the conviction will appear on your driving record — the DMV will not count it as a violation point, but it will not be held confidential. After the court processes your completion, contact the DMV Mandatory Actions Unit at dmvcdltvs@dmv.ca.gov or (916) 657-6525 to request point masking.

San Diego Traffic School FAQ

How much does San Diego traffic school cost?

Our online course is $44.95, the classroom course is $65, and the booklet course is $60. Each price is the total cost with no hidden fees. The San Diego County Superior Court separately charges a $52 administrative fee on top of your traffic fine — you pay that directly to the court. Our course fee and the court’s fee are two separate payments. Your total out-of-pocket cost for the online course is $44.95 (to us) plus your bail amount plus $52 (to the court).

Is this San Diego traffic school accepted by all San Diego courts?

Yes. Bell Gardens Traffic School holds California DMV License #E9562 (TVS #1083) and is accepted by every San Diego County Superior Court division — Kearny Mesa (37480), El Cajon (37440), Vista (37465), and Chula Vista (37485). When you complete our course, we electronically file your completion certificate with both the California DMV and your assigned San Diego courthouse. You do not need to visit the court or mail any paperwork.

How long do I have to complete San Diego traffic school?

San Diego County gives you 90 days to complete traffic school from the date the court approves your request and you pay your fine and fees. This is longer than many other California counties. However, San Diego does not offer a standard extension. If you need more time, you must contact the court directly to request one, and approval is not guaranteed. We recommend starting as soon as possible to avoid deadline pressure.

How do I request traffic school in San Diego County?

You can request traffic school online, by phone, by mail, or in person. The fastest method is the San Diego Superior Court Traffic Portal — select “Request Traffic School” when viewing your citation and pay the total bail plus the $52 administrative fee by credit or debit card. You will receive a 90-day continuance to complete the course. You can also call your courthouse Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM.

What is the San Diego County traffic school administrative fee?

The San Diego County Superior Court charges a $52 administrative fee on top of your traffic fine (bail amount) to attend traffic school. This fee is paid directly to the court, not to the traffic school. The total amount — your bail plus $52 — will be listed on your courtesy notice under “Traffic School.” Payment plans and financial hardship options are available if you cannot pay the full amount at once.

Will San Diego traffic school keep the ticket off my insurance?

Yes. Completing a DMV-approved traffic school course for an eligible one-point violation masks the ticket from your public driving record. The point is not reported to or counted by your insurance company, which means your rates will not increase because of this ticket. Without traffic school, a single point on your driving record can raise your auto insurance premiums by an average of 20% for up to three years. San Diego County drivers are eligible for traffic school once every 18 months.

How do I find my San Diego traffic court code?

Your court code is printed on your traffic citation and on your courtesy notice from the court. San Diego County has four active traffic court codes: 37480 (Kearny Mesa, the main San Diego traffic court), 37440 (El Cajon / East County), 37465 (Vista / North County), and 37485 (Chula Vista / South County). If your citation shows a different code, it is likely a legacy code that has been consolidated — match your courthouse address to the table on this page to find the current code.

What happens if I miss my San Diego traffic school deadline?

If you fail to complete traffic school by your court-imposed deadline, your conviction will remain on your public driving record and the point will be counted by your insurance company. The court may also impose a $100 civil assessment penalty, issue a warrant, or refer your case to a collection agency, which can result in wage garnishments, tax refund intercepts, or bank levies. If you think you may miss your deadline, contact the court immediately to request an extension before the deadline passes.
